Custom T-shirt – How to Design and Make Your Own T-shirt
In fact many people regard Inkscape as superior to the Adobe Illustrator alternative because it is an ongoing project created by users with all the top vector image programs in mind so it has the best elements of everything. Please remember that if you use Adobe Illustrator to create a legitimate t-shirt business and create a custom t-shirt for sale in an online shop you will need a legitimate licensed copy of Illustrator. If you cannot afford this, use Inkscape instead. If you want to make your own t-shirt on Inkscape or Illustrator the controls are very similar but Inkscape has some more flexibility on the anchors and curves. Your first step is to download some free fonts. You can do a search for some grunge fonts online that are available for free download. Check the licensing on these fonts, as some are free only for personal use.
Draw your design on paper first then scan it in to your vector program. It will make your design easier to create as your hand gets free reign over the space on your paper. Drawing free hand in Illustrator/Inkscape is very difficult and you may block this way. When making a custom t-shirt you want it to make a statement so draw a selection of images that appeal to your ideals. You can include city icons, hobbies, themes and random images. As you make these into vector designs on Illustrator make each image separately and group them so they can be easily moved. Then move the images around until you have the perfect t-shirt layout to make your own t-shirt.
You then need to add grunge effects to the custom t-shirt. This includes your grunge font text but you can also add ink spatters, speckles and splats and play around with abstract imagery until you get the look and feel you like. Again, these images can be drawn before hand to make it easier to create. After you have nearly finished designing your custom t-shirt, and you have the design all set up and ready to go, you just need to actually create and make your own t-shirt. This is easier than you may think, so long as you used a vector program to make your design. If you use a pixel based program such as GIMP or Adobe Photoshop you may encounter resizing problems at this stage. The bigger your image gets the more distorted it gets and also if your image is too large and needs to be reduced to fit the custom t-shirt you can also get distortion.
To make your own t-shirt with a perfectly sized design you don’t need to know the t-shirt size. Just create a vector image to make your own t-shirt design and you will be able to easily resize the image until it looks just right on the t-shirt. Use a flash custom t-shirt application on a t-shirt design website and upload a large copy of your vector image (or one with 300 or 600 dpi) that has been saved for web. The custom t-shirt application will resize and position the image for you. You can then click and drag the image to where you want it to be. Once you have the design for your t-shirt it really is a matter of seconds to upload it and order the t-shirt.
